Just imagine it – your model railroad train all set up and ready to impress. The designing of a model train includes a great deal of imagination and
engineering. In fact many modelers refer to it as imagineering. I love that word! After all there’s so much more to having a great setup than just popping down some track and trees.
Some people are better visionaries than others. Some can almost instantly imagine what it is they want their setup to look like, while others (like me) have to spend a great deal of time with pen and paper trying to envision what it is you want to achieve. Of course there’s no rule that says you have to keep what you build. At any given moment you just might get the whim to rebuild and make some major changes.
The amount of space you have to work with plays an important role in what you design. There’s a big difference between a room in a basement and the whole basement. It’s a good idea to start by knowing your space limitations so you don’t find yourself crowded out.
You’ll also need to name your railroad. Name it as you like – there’s no rules here! You’ll need to determine your priorities, what type of clothing fits your era, and what do the buildings look like from that time period, and ….well you get the idea. If you are going to do this realistically you’ll need to keep everything time period specific. It will make for a much better looking setup.
If we are being honest here – this is a hobby which is endless. You build it you change it you knock it down you build it you change it you knock it down…and on it goes. Construction is a common ongoing practice for those building model railroad sets. After all, once it’s up you see things that would make it better, so why not make the change, but then you see something else, and so it goes.
Model trains can be a lot of fun. There are so many choices and they are scaled down but ever so realistic. I think that’s part of what makes them so interesting. When your set is done right, it can look so realistic. Of course there’s only one catch – only little people live here.
Some model railroaders do a lot of research before beginning their build, because they want to replicate a railroad station, even a town. Others run more with their imagination, not worrying about specifics. Instead they let their imagination run wild and enjoy the fruits of that imagination. There’s no right or wrong – it’s whatever you feel comfortable with.
This was an extremely popular hobby a couple of decades a go and then it suddenly slowed and almost disappeared. Today the model railroad train has made a comeback and is going strong, with old timers and new comers alike finding pleasure in building their own set for their model train. Never tried? Why not give it a try? Start small but be prepared for growth!
